Central Park is a cool place. It's been in countless television shows, movies, and books including the still hip after many years "The Catcher in the Rye" in which much of the second half of the book is set in Central Park. It's been the place of much history. The Gates which was a land art project in 2005 by Christo and Jeanne Claude was quite an interesting event that was newsworthy the world over. The Gates took over Central Park for the first two months of 2005. The Beatles (except for George Harrison who was back at the hotel sick) visited Central Park on their first visit to New York City! If this is your first visit to New York City, shouldn't you visit Central Park as well?
Central Park has an almost unlimited amount of wonderful things to see inside (well outside really! that's the point, isn't it?) It's hard to choose just a few things to write about here but that's my job so I'll try to get to it! Central Park is a beautiful place to wander around but if you are looking for somewhere specific to check out you can start with the wonderful Central Park Zoo and Children's Petting Zoo both of which can be found on the east side of the park at 64th street. I highly recommend both of these zoos with a special recommendation for the Petting Zoo which I think is just really great, even if you are not a child. I enjoy it! There are some great events that take place in Central Park if you are visiting during the summer months especially. This includes free concerts. You may have heard of the free concerts given in Central Park by such stars as Simon & Garfunkle, Diana Ross, Dave Matthews Band, and Garth Brooks but there are also smaller concerts given in Central Park throughout the summer months. There are also free open air theater productions usually plays by Shakespeare.
